License activation, designed for humans
A major UX overhaul of the trial-and-buy flow. One-click activation, professional license interface, automatic redirect, all the friction points, removed.
- One-click trial and Pro activation, paste licence, click button, done
- Professional license-management interface in WP admin
- Automatic redirect to your first table after successful activation
- Clear status indicators for trial / active / expired states
- Self-service license recovery for lost-key situations
Software activation flows are where good plugins go to die.
You’ve seen them: a key field, an “Activate” button, a 50/50 chance the next screen is a JSON error or a half-rendered admin page. Even when they work, they leave you wondering whether you should email support to confirm.
3.4 is the version where we stopped tolerating that.
The new flow#
Trial start (from this site, or from inside the plugin):
- Click “Start free trial”
- Sign in with your email (Freemius handles auth, no separate account needed)
- Land back in WP admin with the trial already active
- Get redirected to your first table builder, not a blank dashboard
Pro activation after trial:
- Click “Upgrade to Pro” from inside the plugin
- Complete checkout in a Freemius modal
- The licence applies in the background, no key copy-paste required
- The plugin’s badge updates in real-time from “Trial” to “Pro”
Why this took a major version#
Activation flows touch licence storage, admin notices, capability gates, and feature flags. Reworking it touched four of those layers, plus a fifth that didn’t exist: the post-activation onboarding redirect.
The redirect is the real win here. Pre-3.4, a successful activation dumped you on the plugin’s settings page, useful for power users, terrible for first-time users staring at a screen full of toggles wondering “what now?”.
3.4 redirects you to the table builder, with the first form already auto-selected if you have a Gravity Form on the site. Two clicks to a working table. That’s the bar.
License management interface#
The new License panel shows:
- Your current plan (Free / Trial / Pro / Agency)
- Days remaining (for trial)
- Active sites (for Agency)
- Last verification timestamp
- A single “Manage subscription” button that opens Freemius’s customer portal
No more guessing whether your licence is “actually working”. No more support emails asking us to confirm.
What this enabled#
Without 3.4, every subsequent feature would have shipped behind a confused activation flow. With 3.4, the path from “I want to try this” to “I’m using it” went from ~10 minutes to ~30 seconds.
That number doesn’t show up in marketing copy, but it’s the reason the plugin’s activation-to-Pro conversion improved measurably in Q4 2025.
